The Perfect Terrain
Minnesota is not the first state that comes to mind when the topic of phenomenal soaring sites is discussed among top competition pilots. Some of the more famous soaring states are Nevada, California, Colorado, Texas and of course the states that the Appalachians run through, from Pennsyvania down to Georgia. Having flown sailplanes in every one of these states, I believe Minnesota is better than any of these states to LEARN cross country flying. Why? The terrain.

Minnesota was glaciated during the ice age. The retreating glacier formed the Mississppi on our Eastern border and the Missouri on our Western border. This glacier left Minnesota primed to become the beautiful, flat patch-work quilt of rich farmland that it is. On the other side of each of these rivers, hilly terrain. We inflated our hot air balloon one day at Faribault, launched and drifted north about 10 miles, shooting pictures all the way. Here's what Minnesota looks like from the air in September.
